Brief
The institute published forty papers a year and had no way to illustrate them.
Idea
Grow a diagram from each abstract. Every paper gets a figure that is unique and still looks like family.
Build
Twelve weeks to write the system and one designer to learn to maintain it.
Launch
The new site launched with a figure for every paper in the archive.
After
Researchers publish new figures without asking for a design sprint, and the system keeps up, quarter after quarter.
